Ketamine treatment
Ketamine is not FDA-approved specifically for anxiety disorders. Evidence is smaller and more preliminary than the depression literature, and depression findings should not be presented as proof of anxiety treatment effectiveness. Established psychological and medication treatments remain part of a clinician-led assessment.

Spravato (esketamine) is an FDA-approved medication intended for specific adult depression indications, such as treatment-resistant depression. Due to its FDA approval status, many health insurance policies offer some level of coverage for Spravato. However, this is not guaranteed, and patients almost always need to complete a prior authorization process. Individuals should contact their insurance administrators directly to verify benefits, understand co-pays, and check deductible statuses. Patients are encouraged to ask the treating clinic for a written estimate covering both the medication and the clinical observation time.
Ketamine delivered through intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), or sublingual routes for psychiatric use is considered off-label. Consequently, insurance networks rarely cover these treatments, making them a self-pay expense for the patient. It is crucial to request a clear fee schedule from the clinic before starting a regimen. Additionally, prospective patients should be aware of safety considerations. The FDA has published a FDA warning about compounded ketamine products detailing the risks of unapproved formulations. Finally, residents should account for the indirect costs of therapy, including travel expenses and potential lost wages associated with the frequent appointments required during the induction phase.
Participating in ketamine or esketamine therapy involves a significant time commitment, beginning with a comprehensive clinical assessment and followed by repeated visits. Spravato must be administered within a certified healthcare setting. After self-administering the nasal spray, patients are required to stay at the clinic for at least two hours of monitoring to ensure their safety. Following the observation period, a responsible adult must drive the patient home. Patients are strictly instructed not to drive or operate machinery until the next day after a restful sleep. More information on this protocol is available on the Spravato website.
When planning treatment, Tarrytown residents must consider the logistics of traveling to regional clinics. Westchester traffic, long distances to specific providers, and winter snow or ice in the Hudson Valley can all affect travel plans. While telehealth can facilitate initial assessments and ongoing psychiatric support, it does not replace the need for in-person treatment. Spravato is never administered at home. Furthermore, while some providers prescribe compounded ketamine for home use, these are not FDA-approved for psychiatric care, and the FDA advises against such use without on-site monitoring.
If you or a loved one are in distress, please contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988 (available 24/7), or call 911 for immediate emergencies.
Tarrytown residents usually find Spravato providers by seeking a referral from their primary care physician or a local psychiatrist. While there are no clinics listed directly in Tarrytown in our directory, certified treatment centers are located in nearby Westchester County communities, such as White Plains, which handle these specialized therapies.
The FDA mandates a strict clinical observation period of at least two hours following the administration of Spravato (esketamine). During this timeframe, healthcare professionals monitor your blood pressure and watch for potential side effects, such as dissociation or sedation, ensuring you are stable before discharge.
Intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), and sublingual ketamine are prescribed off-label for mental health conditions. Because these specific applications lack FDA approval, they are typically not covered by health insurance plans in Westchester County. Patients usually must pay out-of-pocket for these types of ketamine therapies.
Clinic safety policies generally require a known, responsible adult, such as a trusted friend or family member, to pick you up following your Spravato session. Relying on rideshare services like Uber or taxis is typically not permitted due to the lingering sedative effects of the medication.
No, ketamine and esketamine are not FDA-approved to treat anxiety. Spravato (esketamine) is specifically approved for treatment-resistant depression and depressive symptoms in adults with major depressive disorder who have acute suicidal ideation. Any use of ketamine for anxiety is considered strictly off-label.
Yes, many psychiatric clinics serving the Hudson Valley offer telehealth for initial consultations and follow-up assessments. However, the actual administration of Spravato or in-clinic ketamine treatments must occur in person. Telehealth is a valuable tool for coordination but does not enable the home administration of these supervised therapies.
Costs, coverage & aftercare
IV, IM and compounded ketamine for psychiatric conditions are off-label; many programs are self-pay. Ask about assessment, medication, administration, monitoring, therapy and maintenance charges separately. We do not assume a statewide price.
Spravato is FDA-approved esketamine, not the same as ketamine infusions. Coverage is not guaranteed. Check eligibility, prior authorization, network status, drug and visit charges, deductibles and copays with your insurer and clinic.
Spravato requires a certified healthcare setting and monitoring for at least two hours. Arrange transport home; do not drive until the next day after restful sleep. For other ketamine treatments, follow your clinician's instructions. Follow-up and maintenance depend on response and tolerability.
Ask who manages your medications, how your usual clinician will receive updates, and whom to contact between visits. Neither a shortage designation nor local depression statistics show that ketamine is appropriate or effective for you. Consult a licensed physician.
Use these questions when you call or book a consultation with any Tarrytown provider.
Ask whether a physician, psychiatrist or anesthesiologist oversees each session and who you can reach afterward.
A good clinic reviews your history, medications, blood pressure and past treatments before recommending ketamine.
Look for continuous vital-sign monitoring and a calm, private recovery space.
IV infusions, Spravato® nasal spray, IM or sublingual options suit different goals and budgets.
Ask how the clinic coordinates with your therapist or offers integration support between sessions.
Request a written estimate for the first series and any maintenance sessions before you start.
